CHEPSTOW COMMUNITY
BIG BAND
Musical Director - Alex White
"A good mix of people, old and young"
(band member comment)
An exciting opportunity for Chepstow and surrounding areas!
Founded by Band Administrator Brian Ellam in April 2012, Swingcopation is an opportunity for players of saxes, trumpets, trombones and rhythm instruments to come together and share the joy of the Big Band sound, from Swing Era standards through to current theme tunes.
Following the success of Wyedean School's Big Band - W.D.Forte! - we decided to open things up to others in the local community, including young and more experienced musicians, and meet regularly for longer rehearsals. So far we have gathered a varied group of students from several schools, and adults from all over South East Wales and South Gloucestershire.
Anyone who can cope with reading music at around Grade IV upwards is welcome at rehearsals, on Wednesday evenings in school term time and running from 7.30 - 9.00pm with a half-time break for QUALITY coffee (tea/water) and biscuits! Please see the Next Rehearsal page for a full list of rehearsal dates. For younger and less experienced musicians, we have had the Microjazz Training Band rehearsing from 6-7.15pm on the same evenings since January 2013. From September 2015, these two groups are included in membership of Chepstow Community Music Centre or £5 per session.
Our infamous motto "ENJOY AND ACHIEVE!" reflects the fact that we intend to have a lot of fun whilst reaching high performance standards. We aspire to the true sense of the words "amateur" (doing something for the love of it) and "professional" (produced with great competence and skill).
We are always happy to accept bookings to perform locally - demo videos are kept up to date on this site to help you to assess our suitability for your event.
If you're interested in getting involved with us as an instrumentalist, please take a look at our list of repertoire and/or try the YouTube page. You can use the on-line form or get in touch via the other means on the contact page. We appreciate that most musicians are busy people who often play in several bands, so there is no pressure to commit to any more than is right and comfortable for you - all we ask is for good communication so we all know where we stand for each rehearsal and gig.
We look forward to hearing from you soon - in the meantime, enjoy these pictures of the band working with Mike Pilley in a recent Workshop (photography by Jess Sterry Tel. 07896 999 718).
